Fat Loss

Is it hard for you to stop emotional eating and difficult to lose weight because of stress, emotional issues, worry and anxiety?  Is it easier to reach for food to medicate these feelings instead of really confronting issues that are upsetting you? Are you stress eating and unable to stop?

Emotional Eating causes excessive weight gain and usually a lot of belly fat which can be extremely detrimental to your health.  To lose belly fat and extra weight you must target the underlying emotions and what is causing the emotional eating.

Triggers for Emotional Eating & Weight Gain

The problem with emotional eating may end in weight gain on the scale but it begins in the mind.  Everyone has good days and bad days.  How we deal with the bad ones brings emotional eating into play.

Finding comfort in food is easy.  Food won’t confront you, it won’t say no, won’t hurt or judge you.  Food can make eating pleasurable stimulating the release of endorphins which is the same experience when exercising.

So after you eat you feel better, almost like medicating.  Emotional eating can make weight loss and losing belly fat very challenging and frustrating.

Emotional eaters use food to relieve stress.  They hide behind the food instead of trying to solve the problem.  This is a common issue especially when the stress is something horrible such as abuse, illness, divorce, job loss or death.

To stop emotional eating you need to get to the bottom of what is bothering you.

Make a list of your favorite unhealthy foods and drinks.  The things you ingest when you know you shouldn’t.  What circumstances provoke or stir up your need to ingest these substances.  You may drink alcohol when you are unable to cope.

If this is a real problem you need to seek help through a support group.  Smoking might be another addiction you think you need to cope with stress. Get the support you need in addressing these problems so you can put a stop to emotional eating.

How do you know if you are using food in this way and stress eating?  The first sign is obvious.  You will gain weight especially belly fat  if you eat too much.  Other ways you can tell and you might want to examine are:

Have you been under stress lately at work or at home?

Has anything traumatic happened in the last year?

Are you dealing with a problem but have not found a solution?

Answering yes to any of these questions could mean that you turn to food.  You eat, but you are not necessarily hungry.  The foods you choose to eat are called ‘comfort foods’ and this makes it very challenging to lose weight.

Comfort foods can be high fat foods like French fries and fried foods.  High carb foods like pasta and cheese, mashed potatoes and white bread and sugary foods like ice cream, donuts, cookies and cake.

Best Ways to Deal with Emotional Eating & Weight Loss

The first step is recognizing that you have a problem with emotional eating.  You may experience feelings of helplessness and guilt.

Secondly, you need to seek counseling.  There are many good counselors out there who can meet your particular needs.  Counseling will help you with your underlying issues and how to become empowered again.

Are you living in isolation with no family or social connection? You may just be lonely.  You need community to exist in a healthy manner. Join a church or a group you have an interest in.

Does boredom get to you and then you cannot stop emotional eating?   You need a hobby or interest to develop fulfillment instead of filling up on food.

Has eating the wrong foods become an addiction in itself.  The wrong foods can set up cravings wanting more and more and will make it even harder to lose weight. Resolve your emotional issues, clear the air and then set yourself upon a steady foundation so you can succeed in your weight loss.
