What is hypothyroidism (low thyroid) and what does it have to do with weight gain?

Low thyroid or hypothyroidism means a slow thyroid, so when you have a slow thyroid you will in turn have a slow metabolism – and guess what that equates to? yes you guessed it, hypothyroidism weight gain!

This can be a very frustrating and futile struggle especially if you do not know what your dealing with and you are busting your butt to burn fat.  Believe me I know what it’s like!

Hypothyroidism has become common knowledge because so many people have a thyroid imbalance.  There are about 27 million people in America who have thyroid problems but less than half of them are aware of it because the symptoms can mimic so many other conditions.

I discovered I had hypothyroidism after testing, which in my case is caused by Hashimotos Thyroiditis. This is when the immune system attacks the thyroid. Not a very nice thought I must admit but I somehow had to find a way to make my thyroid stronger and stand up to the bullies!

Symptoms of Under active Thyroid

I suspected something wasn’t quite right because I was fatigued beyond exhaustion, depressed, and miserable but appearing to all and sundry, vibrant and happy.  Who was I kidding?  Well…….. most people – but it took a ton of energy to keep the facade from cracking.  I was also exacerbating existing stress on my thyroid and adrenals.

As well as feeling deeply fatigued I had very dry skin, hair falling out, aches and pains, constant cold hands and feet, digestive issues, constipation, gallbladder issues and the list goes on.  And you thought this was just about weight gain, well it is but that’s not the only bodily function your thyroid affects.

I felt like a dwarf out of snow white, sleepy or grumpy or both – but I digress…………….  I could barely get up in the morning no matter how much sleep I had, and teaching Pilates was becoming a distant dream.

Stress of Hypothyroidism

I taught Pilates on the Pilates equipment so it was less stressful on my body as I didn’t have to perform all of the exercises.

However at the time of my downfall I was getting up at 4.30am to teach a mat class which I had to demonstrate and perform.

That’s when my back decided to give out and I ended up in dreadful pain!  Well the facade had finally cracked.

I had pushed myself way too far but my reasoning was that I needed to improve my diet or get more sleep or deal with my underlying emotional issues and then I would miraculously feel better.

Of course I had tried all of these things and had been doing so for a while and I was getting worse.

Even though the facade had cracked I still did not know what was happening but I started to get an inkling that something deeper wasn’t quite right…… you think?  Brain power can slow down too!

It was about this time I noticed that some of my clients were hypothyroid and on medication so I started to quiz (interrogate) them on their symptoms and what medication they were taking.

Thus began my long and thorough research into the world of hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s.

In case you are wondering where your thyroid gland is, it’s located in your neck just below your Adams apple and above your collar bone.  It is normally very small, only about two inches but if your thyroid gets inflamed you may develop a goiter which can cause an apparent bulge on your throat.

Thyroid Imbalance

Thyroid hormones are responsible for a wide variety of functions in your body.  They help with body temperature, fertility, digestion, overall growth, your heart rate, the rate at which your body burns calories and your memory and mood.  Not such a biggie right?

Well the thyroid has an enormous job for such a tiny weeny gland its surprising to most people to find out what the thyroid actually does and how much it governs, who knew?

So when thyroid hormones become unbalanced, either too high or too low, the chemical reactions all over the body are out of whack.  An under-active thyroid can lower energy and slow down your metabolism.

In fact it can slow everything down causing constipation, indigestion, bloating, weight gain and gallbladder problems.

Thyroid Weight Gain

Just to see if your paying attention: if your thyroid is slow and sluggish then your metabolism will be slow and sluggish causing thyroid weight gain.

If you have the opposite of hypothyroid known as hyperthyroid then your metabolism is fast and you burn weight quickly.

But don’t go thinking you would rather be hyper to get skinny because hyper can be even more problematic along with a different set of crazy making symptoms.

As I mentioned previously the opposite of hypothyroidism is hyperthyroidism which is commonly known as Graves disease.

When you have Graves disease you have the opposite symptoms of a slow thyroid.  Your heart can race which can be very scary, you become intolerant to heat and of course you can lose weight and get very skinny and tired. Thyroid balance is a tricky business so seeing a specialist is very important.

Low Thyroid Symptoms

Signs that you have too little thyroid:

  • coarse dry hair and skin
  • confusion and forgetfulness and brain fog
  • droopy eyelids and puffy face and puffy everything if you ask me!
  • exhaustion, intolerance to cold, lethargy, loss of motivation, depression
  • loss of hair, loss of outer third of eyebrow (a very telltale sign)
  • muscle cramps, stiffness and pain, arthritis
  • slow pulse
  • weight gain
  • heavy period or no period
  • constipation
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • difficulty swallowing.

High Thyroid Symptoms

Signs that you have too much thyroid:

  • Excessive body heat
  • extreme hunger
  • fast pulse, pounding heartbeat
  • prominent eyes
  • sweating
  • weight loss
  • diarrhea
  • dizziness
  • emotional instability, hyperactivity
  • increased hair growth
  • irritability
  • insomnia

You may not have all of these symptoms and you could have more than I have listed and that’s why testing is important.

I learned how important it was to get the correct tests done and especially get tested for antibodies.  So eventually that’s what I did after finding the right doctor.

After a bit of trial and error with medication I now take Naturethroid which is natural dessicated thyroid very similar to Armour. It contains T4 and T3 which is what I needed in order for my symptoms to improve.

If you suspect that something might be a amiss with your thyroid find a reputable doctor and have the correct tests done.
