When you have an underactive thyroid, it can cause a lot of problems for you in the long run. Hypothyroidism is one such condition that is not to be taken lightly, and some of its symptoms include bone weary fatigue, constipation, weight gain and depression.

Luckily, there are certain foods that can be integrated into your diet to aid in restoring your thyroid function and building a stronger immune system.  Your immune system is key to feeling healthier and stronger and keeping this in mind is paramount to relieving stress on your body.

Fish

One of the best things about integrating fish into your diet is that it contains omega-3 fatty acids. Fish like trout, tuna and salmon are filled with omega-3 fatty acids, and they are at the same time perfect for dinner or lunch. Fish needs to be organic and not farmed because we do not want to be consuming antibiotics and mercury.

What is really interesting is that the omega-3 fatty acids you end up consuming from fish will not only decrease inflammation, but it will also at the same time improve your immune system and lower the risk of heart related problems. On the other hand, fish is also a good source of essential nutrients like selenium, which itself is mostly found in the thyroid gland thus restoring its function.

Fresh Vegetables and Fruits

Hypothyroidism’s earliest symptoms include excessive weight gain. This does not necessarily mean there is not any way you can deal with it. By taking advantage of high density and low-calorie foods like fresh vegetables and fruits you will shed pounds in no time. Essentially, you will have to make sure you have your share of fresh fruits and vegetables with each meal. These foods are not only rich in nutrients, but they have the necessary antioxidants to strengthen your immune system.

Dairy

A lot of people are not aware that there is an association between Hashimoto’s disease and vitamin D deficiency. This is in turn is one of the most common causes of hypothyroidism as concluded by a study issued by the journal titled ‘Thyroid’ in 2011. If you are not getting your daily dose of sunlight and the majority of the population are not, especially when we are using sunscreen lotion, make sure you take a supplement of Vitamin D.  You can also eat dairy such as milk and cheese if you are not sensitive to these foods.

 

Nuts

Even though you may not realize it, nuts are another great source of selenium. Whether it is macadamia, Brazilian nuts or hazelnuts that you are looking for, they are all high in selenium, which as mentioned earlier considerably increases thyroid function. Almonds are another healthy addition. Do not go overboard with nuts as they are calorie dense and can quite easily stack the pounds on.

Whole Grains

If you are suffering from an underactive thyroid problem, you may also be suffering from constipation. It is not unusual among patients, but it can create a lot of problems if it is not dealt with immediately. This means you will have to take advantage of whole grain foods like brown bread, rice, and pasta. These foods are high in fibers that will aid in bowel movement.  If you are sensitive towards gluten you can eat gluten free bread and pasta and rice.  Some professionals are now advocating that people with hypothyroidism, especially Hashimoto’s refrain from eating any grains whatsoever.  You may have to test this yourself and see how your body reacts.

Beans

Being a versatile and inexpensive food, beans prove to be a great source of energy. Beans not only contain carbohydrates, but they also come equipped with antioxidants, minerals, vitamins and proteins. Furthermore, they are also high in fiber, which as mentioned earlier is good for patients suffering from constipation. If you have never tried beans before, you will realize there are plenty of different types for you to choose from.

Overall your diet should contain mostly fresh foods, eliminating processed, packaged and sugary junk.  If you keep your diet simple, fresh and healthy your energy levels will start to balance out and you will be supporting and strengthening your immune system because thyroid problems are really an immune system dysfunction.

You also need to be aware of what foods you may be sensitive to as allergies can cause the immune system problems and weakness.  Stay tuned to your body and the affects of certain foods so you can become familiar with substances that compliment your system and the one’s you know you need to avoid.
